Studio Xavier Privas in Paris

Property ID : 11588

Overview

Bedrooms 1 Sleeps 2 Bathrooms 1.0 Type Studio Min. Stay 1 Night

Description

The building was famous in the 18th century as it hosted left bank intellectuals who defined our modern times. The building was named `Xavier Privas` after the head abbot of the St Severin Church. It is triple sandwiched between 3 others building and thus escaped thru the centuries the erosion of time, in the 10th century the block was re-constructed from wooden beams recycled from the houses built on the bridges.

In the studio the beam on the wall facing you ( the most curved one, cut with axes) was carbon 14 tested and dated back to 12th Century which makes it a true historical treasure as it probably was recycled from Notre Dame or its proximity and then recycled several times in several houses thru the centuries. This beam, should it be able to speak, would count you the rough lives in the dark ages and what it meant living under the whim of a Monarch.

The abbots who lived at Xavier Privas were mavericks. They produced the first University of the World- La Sorbonne- which in turn hatched heretic ideas such as equality-for-all-men. Beginning with Rousseau and Voltaire and culminating with the `declaration des droits de l'homme` which were timidly proclaimed for the first time in history by l'Hotel de Ville (across the Bridge near the studio) on 1770 on the place de Greves. Later faire la greve meant to go on strike which was born there. As for those who dared talk of `equality` and `liberty` they were executed with common criminals or those who challenged Nobility, to set an example in front of the Hotel de Ville these weekly executions on place de Greves dated from the 11th century. As you walk past it, take a moment to absorb history. Civilization as we know it, was built on the blood shed by those forgotten intellectuals.

As you cross over the bridges bear in mind that the Kings of France and the Nobility lived on the right side of the river, in contrast the new breed of mavericks who spoke of equality lived on the left. The term `left` was coined, and since then the term `leftist` in politics is used universally to this day and it was born right there. Which brings us back to your studio, located in one of the most important neighborhood in history, because it is the place where Democracy was hatched, and 80 millions visitors every year make these streets arguably the most visited location on Earth.<

Your window looks into a quiet private courtyard just outside the busy streets. The studio gets plenty of light and sun. It has authentic wooden beams on its ceiling, dating back 12th century. Le studio is furnished with a double-bed, cafe-style table and chairs, functional bathroom with shower, a fridge, coffee machine and microwave. It is located on the third floor, and is approximately 180 Square Feet.<
